What We Can Learn From the 2011 Internet Retailer Conference & Exhibition
The Internet Retailer Conference & Exhibition is one of the major worldwide conferences and exhibitions for Internet businesses. IRCE features major speakers and exhibitors in the online marketing space from major corporations, such as eBay, Walgreens and the Huffington Post. This year, Minyoung Bowling from Transportation Safety Apparel, an eLink Design client, attended the conference and has agreed to share some of what he learned with you.
eLink: What were the hot topics of this year's conference?
Bowling: E-commerce adaptation to the latest mobile devices, such as mobile phones and iPad; social media and it's affect on e-commerce to grow business; how Bing is emerging as viable search engine.
eLink: How would you describe the Internet marketing/selling landscape after attending? How did your perception change?
“…the way we shop will change and it will be mainly driven through e-commerce. And it won't be in 5, 10 or 20 years; it will be sooner than anyone realizes.”
Bowling: I think everyone that attended the IRCE saw that the future footprint of the way we shop will change and it will be mainly driven through ecommerce. And it won't be in 5, 10 or 20 years, it will be sooner than anyone realizes.
We need to really invest and optimize for this change that is inevitable.
eLink: What ideas or tools will you implement immediately after going to the conference?
"It’s about optimizing everything we do on the website."
Bowling: SEO and its research need to be part of our mainstream marketing strategy along with its analytic data to carefully monitor our customers buying behavior. How are we going to be unique in a business where there are thousands of businesses that are just like you selling the same products? It’s about optimizing everything we do on the website.
eLink: What would you say to other companies, mainly small businesses, that have never had a chance to be exposed to the conference? How focused on Internet marketing should they be?
Bowling: Attend the IRCE and be awakened to what others have already found out. It is a big paradigm shift in how we do direct marketing. The trick is to find that right partner for your business to share the ride.
Any small businesses that are not focused on their business website will be left behind by those who do. Our lives are changing by the hour by technology that is with us 24 hours a day. Today's customers are "connected" worldwide in multiple ways. They no longer have to wait or go somewhere to get their products or services. It is now literally all in the palm of their hands. If your business is not ready, they will find others that are.
eLink: Any other thoughts that you would like to share with our readers?
Bowling: Prior to going to IRCE, I had some insight as to how important SEO was to our website. The biggest hurdle to get over was to explain to the owner how to measure the cost that is associated with SEO that takes months before you can start to measure its effectiveness. I'm sure there are business owners out there that believe just by having a web presence is enough to sustain their business. I'm here to tell you that IRCE has not only further validated what I already knew, but we need to do even more.
"After attending the conference, our owner, which up until now has been curious about the SEO and has been my biggest hurdle, is now my biggest supporter to invest fully in our website. If you want to grow your business, you must make your website a priority or you will be left behind."
